What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by a sideways curvature of the spine, commonly diagnosed during adolescence. While scoliosis can be associated with conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the exact cause of most cases in children remains unknown.

Although most cases of scoliosis are mild, some curves can worsen as children grow. Severe scoliosis can have a disabling effect, reducing the space within the chest and impairing lung function.

Children with mild scoliosis are closely monitored, typically through the use of X-rays, to assess the progression of the curve. In many cases, no treatment is required. However, some children may need to wear a brace to prevent further deterioration, while others may undergo surgery to correct more severe curves.
